Meet the Lemur

[Production note: This one should feel like Darcy is talking about someone she genuinely loves. More energy than the Elephant, more warmth than the Lion. She can smile through this one.]

Okay, I have to tell you —

The Lemur is my personal favorite to watch in a room.

They walk in and they're already connected to three people before they've set their bag down. They know who had a hard week. They remember your dog's name from six months ago. They've already checked in on the person who was quiet in last Tuesday's meeting.

Not because they were assigned to. Because that's just — how they move through the world.

Lemurs are energized by people. Full stop. They do their best thinking in conversation. They're at their best when they're collaborating, connecting, making the work feel like it means something to somebody.

And in a team setting? They are the culture. Whether anyone realizes it or not.

Here's what makes Lemurs so easy to underestimate:

Their contributions don't show up in the metrics. You can't put "made the team feel human" in a performance review. But you will absolutely feel it when it's gone.

The thing to watch with a Lemur — and this is important — is the gap between what they say and what they mean.

Lemurs are people who will say yes when they mean "I'll try." Who will smile through feedback that actually landed hard. Who will keep the peace in a meeting and then carry the unspoken tension home.

That's not weakness. That's a nervous system that is deeply wired for connection — and genuinely afraid of what happens when that connection gets threatened.

A Zookeeper who understands that? Can do a lot for a Lemur.
