When the Room Goes Wrong
The field guide to live facilitation breakdowns — and exactly how to handle them.
Scenario 1: The Dominant Animal
One participant is taking up 60% of the airtime. They're not wrong, they're just loud. Other voices are receding.
The move: Acknowledge the contribution. Then redirect. "That's a great example of a Lion making the room move. I want to hear from the Dolphins in here — what are you noticing?"

Scenario 2: Open Resistance
A senior leader pushes back on the framework. Publicly. The room is watching how you respond.
The move: Don't defend. Get curious. "Tell me where you're seeing the friction with this — that's actually useful for the room." Resistance, well-handled, becomes the most powerful moment in the session.
Scenario 3: The Room Goes Silent
You've asked a powerful question. You expected engagement. Instead: nothing. Complete silence. And it's getting longer.
The move: Don't fill it. Hold it. Then name it: "This is a question that doesn't have a fast answer. Take a minute, then we'll come back to it." Silence, held intentionally, becomes a feature.
